The upper portion carries a central royal arms vignette flanked by a recumbent lion and unicorn, with castle vignettes at each side and the legend BRANCH OF THE CITY OF GLASGOW BANK along the top border. Oval denomination panels inscribed ONE appear at upper left and right. Two allegorical female figures — one holding a cornucopia and a shield, the other bearing a trident and a shield — stand at the left and right margins respectively. The text body, rendered in copperplate script, states the promise to pay the bearer on demand ONE POUND in terms of the Act of Tynwald, 14° Vict. 1851, with the issuer's name THE BANK OF MONA and sub-legend Incorporated by Act of Tynwald centred in bold letterpress; the bottom border reads INCORPORATED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT. |

The Bank of Mona was a short-lived Isle of Man institution, chartered to serve a small island economy that already had an overcrowded field of note-issuing banks by the mid-nineteenth century. It did not survive long enough to establish meaningful circulation, and notes from this issuer are genuinely rare survivors — not because of systematic destruction, but simply because so few were ever put into use.
Gilmour & Dean were a Glasgow commercial printing firm, competent but not among the specialist banknote engravers of the period. Their involvement here is typical of smaller provincial issuers who lacked the budget or prestige to commission Perkins Bacon or similar security printers.
