Syria's 1972 pound was issued three years into Hafez al-Assad's consolidation of power following the November 1970 "Corrective Movement" coup. The Ba'ath Party branding on state coinage was a deliberate assertion of single-party authority over every instrument of public life, currency included. Assad's government used such issues partly to distinguish his regime's material culture from that of his predecessors within the Ba'ath hierarchy itself.
KM#103 circulated heavily in Syrian markets through the 1970s and survivors in unworn condition are genuinely scarce.
