Additional information

South Sudan's pound coinage was introduced following the country's independence in July 2011, making this one of the youngest national currencies in the world. The 2015 date places this coin in circulation just as the South Sudanese Civil War — which had reignited in December 2013 — was grinding through its second year, severely disrupting the economy and driving inflation that would eventually render low-denomination coinage practically irrelevant to daily transactions.
