A central royal coat of arms vignette is surmounted by the legend INCORPORATED BY ROYAL CHARTER, below which the full bank title THE CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA, LONDON & CHINA spans the width of the note above a manuscript promise-to-pay clause. The large intaglio denomination ONE POUND is printed diagonally across the body of the note, with signature lines for Entd., Accountt., and Manager at the foot, and a red SPECIMEN overprint at lower right. |

A large central oval guilloche panel with fine engine-turned fill is flanked symmetrically by two circular guilloche rosettes, each bearing the numeral 1.
