Aanvullende informatie

Powell Island is one of the smaller landmasses in the South Orkney archipelago, first charted in 1821 during the sealing expedition of Nathaniel Palmer and George Powell — the same voyage that gave the island group its name. The South Orkney Islands have no permanent civilian population and fall under British administration as part of the British Antarctic Territory, making any currency issued in their name a purely notional affair with no circulating function whatsoever.

The dual denomination pairing of sterling and pesos reflects the overlapping territorial claims of Britain and Argentina over the archipelago, a dispute unresolved since Argentina formalized its claim in 1925.
