By 1901, the Staatsdrukkerij had been evacuated from Pretoria ahead of the British advance and relocated to Pietersburg in the northern Transvaal, where the Boer government continued to function in exile. These notes were produced under genuine wartime duress — the press equipment moved by wagon, staff reduced, and supply chains for quality paper and ink severely disrupted. The result is a note that looks the part: rougher production than the earlier Pretoria-issued series, with inconsistencies in impression pressure that are characteristic of the run rather than damage to individual specimens.
The issuing authority name shifted from "De Nationale Bank" to "Regeering der Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek" precisely because the bank's infrastructure had collapsed — this was government paper, not banking paper, issued out of necessity.
