The Soviet poltinnik — half-rouble — was part of the Chervonets reform coinage introduced by the NEP-era State Bank to restore confidence in a currency system that had been obliterated by revolution, civil war, and hyperinflation. Designed by Pyotr Vassilievich Sokolov, the coin was struck at the Leningrad Mint and, briefly, under contract at the Philadelphia and Birmingham mints in 1925. The Y#89.1 and Y#89.2 varieties differ by edge lettering, with the bilingual mint-and-fineness inscription running in opposite directions — a distinction that generates genuine premium differences at auction.
