Issued to commemorate Pope Paul VI's visit to the Philippines in November 1970 — the first papal visit to Asia — this gold strike was part of a broader commemorative program that included base-metal circulation issues and a silver variant. Paul VI's Manila stopover was also notable as the occasion on which a Bolivian painter named Benjamin Mendoza y Amor Flores lunged at the Pope with a ceremonial dagger at the airport, wounding him superficially before being subdued.
The .917 fineness matches traditional British sovereign gold standard, an unusual choice for a Philippine commemorative of this period.
