José Rizal's execution by musket fire at Bagumbayan on December 30, 1896 was calculated by the Spanish colonial authorities to break the nascent independence movement. It had the opposite effect. Within two years, Spain had ceded the Philippines entirely. Rizal has appeared on Philippine coinage almost continuously since the Commonwealth period, making his presence on the circulating peso more a matter of institutional inertia than any single political decision.
The KM#284 series replaced the earlier copper-clad steel composition that had drawn complaints about corrosion in tropical humidity.
