Additional information

Artemio Ricarte was one of the few Filipino revolutionary leaders who refused to swear an oath of allegiance to the United States after the Philippine-American War, choosing permanent exile in Japan over submission. He lived in Yokohama for decades, running a restaurant, before returning to the Philippines in 1942 — escorted back by Japanese forces, which permanently complicated his historical reputation. The BSP's decision to feature him on circulating coinage required navigating that ambiguity directly.
