KM#300 belongs to the "New Generation Currency" coin series introduced by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas beginning in 2017, a program driven largely by counterfeiting concerns and the need to standardize security features across denominations. The shift to nickel-plated steel across the series was a cost-reduction measure; earlier NGC coins had used more expensive alloy compositions that proved economically unsustainable at high mintage volumes.
