Leinenkugel's issued scrip denominated in liquid measure rather than currency — a practical workaround used by some American breweries and taverns to prepay draught sales, avoid small-change problems, or run closed-loop tap room accounts. The pint denomination is self-explanatory in that system. Jacob Leinenkugel founded the Chippewa Falls brewery in 1867, and it remained family-operated through most of the twentieth century; scrip of this kind was most common in the pre-Prohibition and immediate post-repeal periods.
