Obverse description The crowned shield of the East India Company dominates the central field, displaying the quartered arms of the Company flanked by heraldic supporters. The date 1809 appears in the exergue below the shield, while the denomination ONE PIE is inscribed above. A ribbon beneath the shield bears the motto AUSP:REGIS & SENAT:ANGLIAE, signifying issue by authority of the King and Parliament of England. The entire design is enclosed within a raised toothed border, characteristic of the Soho Mint's mechanically struck coinage.
