Obverse description The armorial shield of the East India Company occupies the central field, displaying the company's coat of arms in heraldic style. A ribbon below the shield bears the abbreviated legend AUSP:REG & SEN:ANG, a contraction of the Latin motto Auspicio Regis Et Senatus Angliae, meaning 'By the authority of the King and Senate of England.' The denomination PIE appears above the shield, and the date 1833 is placed in the exergue below. The entire design is contained within a plain raised rim.
