Obverse description The armorial shield of the East India Company occupies the central field, displaying the quartered arms of the Company. A ribbon below bears the abbreviated legend AUSP:REGIS & SENAT:ANG (Auspicio Regis Et Senatus Angliae — By the Authority of the King and Parliament of England), with the denomination PIE appearing above the shield and the date below. The entire design is contained within a plain raised rim. The engraving is typical of the Bombay Presidency coinage of the early nineteenth century.
