The East Africa Protectorate was formally established in 1895, and by 1897 the British administration was actively working out what a local coinage should look like. This silver pattern was part of that process — a trial striking to evaluate design and specification before any circulating issue was committed to. The denomination itself, the pice, was carried over from Indian monetary convention, reflecting the Protectorate's administrative and commercial ties to British India rather than to any indigenous monetary tradition.
