Tonk was the only Muslim-majority princely state in Rajputana, established under the Pindari chieftain Amir Khan, who negotiated a favorable treaty with the British East India Company in 1817 by agreeing to disband his mercenary forces. By 1932, Muhammad Sa'adat Ali Khan was issuing coinage that acknowledged British suzerainty through the inclusion of the reigning emperor's name — a political formality required of most princely states, though enforcement varied considerably across Rajputana.
KM#29a distinguishes this copper issue from an earlier variant, suggesting a documented die or specification change within the type.
