Obverse description Central field features the balemark (merchant's mark) of the United East India Company, rendered as an interlaced monogram incorporating the letters V, O, C arranged in a stylised cipher, all contained within a raised plain circular border. The design is primitively executed in a cast style typical of small-denomination coinage produced for the Malabar Coast trade. The abbreviated legend VEIC appears within or immediately associated with the cipher device. The overall composition is irregular in outline, reflecting the rudimentary striking or casting technique employed.
