Pakistan decimalized its currency in 1961, replacing the anna-based system inherited from British India with a straightforward 100 pice to the rupee structure. This coin belongs to that transitional first decimal issue, produced just as the new denomination framework was being introduced to a population still accustomed to annas and pice of a different reckoning. The decimalization effort was administratively ambitious — new coins across multiple denominations had to enter circulation simultaneously.
KM#16 was struck in bronze for only a brief window before aluminum and other cheaper alloys displaced it in Pakistan's lower denominations through the mid-1960s.
