Obverse description Central field features a plain cross pattée enclosed within a raised inner circle, the arms of the cross meeting the inner ring. The surrounding legend reads ✠ •PP IOhANNES •, identifying Pope John as Pontifex Pontificum, separated by pellet stops. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered billon coinage of the early 14th century Papal States, with the legends showing slight weakness consistent with hand-struck production.
