Obverse description Central device depicting the Volto Santo, the celebrated relic crucifix of Lucca, shown as a frontal facing figure of Christ in long robes, nimbed and standing erect in hieratic style. The figure raises one hand in a gesture of benediction, rendered in a schematic, archaic manner typical of medieval Italian hammered coinage. A beaded or rope border frames the design, with the circular Latin legend SANTVS VVLTVS (Holy Face) disposed around the periphery in uncial characters. The flan is irregular and slightly scyphate in places, consistent with hand-hammered production.
Obverse script Latin (uncial)
Obverse lettering SANTVS VVLTVS
