| Reverse description | Central device consists of a prominent eight-pointed Maltese Cross occupying the majority of the reverse field, rendered in bold relief with deeply incised angles between the arms. The cross is characteristic of the iconography of the Order of Saint John and dominates the flan. A circular Latin legend surrounds the cross, identifying the issuing institution. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of hammered copper coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The overall design is stark and emblematic, reflecting the devotional and institutional character of Hospitaller monetary issues. |
