Blue on light ground note with the issuing bank name 'BANQUE DE SYRIE' in large lettering across the top, accompanied by the Arabic equivalent 'البنك السوري'. The denomination 'UNE PIASTRE SYRIENNE' is printed in the centre in French, with the Arabic 'غرش سوري واحد' below, over a faint guilloche underprint. The date and place of issue 'BEYROUTH le 1er Janvier 1920' appear in the lower centre, flanked by the manuscript signatures of the Secrétaire Général and the Directeur, with the printer's imprint 'BRADBURY, WILKINSON & CO. Bradbury, Wilkinson produced this note at a moment when the Banque de Syrie had only just been established under the French Mandate — the bank received its concession in 1919, and these fractional piastre notes were among the earliest issues it put into circulation. The 1 Piastre denomination addressed a very specific practical problem: the near-total absence of small-change coinage in the immediate post-Ottoman period, when existing coin stocks were hoarded or had simply evaporated.
At 66 × 44 mm, this is genuinely one of the smallest format notes Bradbury, Wilkinson ever produced for a Middle Eastern client.
