Obverse description The central field displays the elaborate papal coat of arms of Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi), featuring a quartered shield bearing an eagle in the upper half and horizontal bands in the lower half, rendered in high relief with rich Baroque decorative mantling. The shield is surmounted by the papal tiara (triregnum) and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter, all supported by ornate scrollwork and foliate cartouche work characteristic of late 17th-century Roman die-cutting. A fine toothed border frames the design. The circular Latin legend reads INNOCENTIVS · XI · PONT · MAX around the periphery.
