| Additional information |
Innocent XI reigned during one of the most militarily charged moments in papal history. The legend on this piastra references Exodus 15:6 — the right hand of God striking down the enemy — issued the year after the Ottoman siege of Vienna was broken at Kahlenberg in September 1683. Innocent had personally bankrolled the Holy League, advancing substantial funds to the Habsburg cause when the imperial treasury was exhausted. This coin is effectively a victory issue, struck with scripture chosen to frame the relief as divine intervention rather than military fortune.
