Additional information

Innocent XII issued this piastra in the final year of his pontificate, by which point he had already pushed through one of the more consequential administrative reforms in late papal history — the 1692 suppression of nepotism via his bull Romanum decet Pontificem, which barred popes from enriching family members with Church revenues or offices. The wheat tax inscription ties directly to the Camera Apostolica's grain monopoly over the Papal States, a fiscal mechanism the papacy had defended against both local resistance and foreign pressure for generations.

Innocent died in September 1700, making 1699 issues terminal for the type.
