1 Piastra - Innocent XI

Innocent XI's pontificate was defined by his relentless campaign to forge a Christian coalition against Ottoman expansion — a project that culminated in the relief of Vienna in 1683, though this piastra predates that triumph by six years. He was chronically at war with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the right of asylum in Rome, disputes that eventually led France to seize Avignon. Papal finances were under severe strain, and Innocent famously refused personal luxury while attempting to redirect Church revenues toward anti-Ottoman military subsidies.

Berman 2090 is among the earlier emissions of his reign, struck before the political pressures of the late 1670s fully materialized.
