The sede vacante of 1669–1670 followed the death of Clement IX, who had spent much of his pontificate attempting to hold together a crumbling Christian coalition against Ottoman expansion — a effort that collapsed with the fall of Venetian Crete in October 1669, just weeks before his death. Antonio Barberini, serving as Camerlengo, exercised the limited authority of that office during the interregnum, and coinage struck under his administration bears his family arms rather than a papal portrait.
The conclave that followed was one of the longest of the century, lasting nearly five months before the election of Clement X in April 1670.
