Leopold II ruled Lippe from 1802 until his death in 1851, but his coinage output was sparse and episodic. This copper pfennig was struck across a narrow four-year window in the 1820s, a period when the small German principalities were under mounting pressure from neighboring states and the broader German Confederation to rationalize their currencies. Lippe resisted full monetary absorption longer than most.
