| Reverse description | The reverse presents a five-line inscription filling the entire field, stating the denomination and monetary category: the numeral I at the top flanked by two decorative floral ornaments, followed by PFENNING, SCHEIDE, MÜNZE, and the date 1817 at the base. The lettering is bold and well-spaced in the plain utilitarian style characteristic of Brunswick Scheidemünze subsidiary coinage of the period. There is no surrounding border legend, and the coin's milled edge forms the sole decorative boundary. |

Brunswick issued this copper pfennig under George IV while he was still Prince Regent — his father George III did not die until January 1820, meaning most of this run was struck before George held any British crown at all. The duchy's coinage rights operated independently of London, a remnant of the personal union between Britain and Hanover that had persisted since 1714.
