Brunswick issued this copper pfennig under George IV while he was still Prince Regent — his father George III remained nominally King of Great Britain until 1820, but the prolonged royal incapacity had long since made George the effective authority over British-linked German holdings. The duchy's coinage of this period reflects the administrative reorganization following the Napoleonic upheaval, Brunswick having been briefly absorbed into the Kingdom of Westphalia under Jérôme Bonaparte before restoration in 1813.
