Adolfshütte was an iron foundry in the Dillenburg region of Hesse-Nassau, and like many German industrial works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Frank'sche Eisenwerke issued its own token coinage — Werksgeld — redeemable only at the company-owned store. This kept wages circulating within the company's own economy. Zinc was the practical choice for low-denomination tokens during periods when metal supplies were constrained, particularly around the First World War.
Hasselmann's catalog remains the primary reference for German Werksgeld, and the 4.1 designation suggests at least one die variant exists within this type.
