Additional information

Wolter von Plettenberg led the Livonian Order through its most militarily decisive period, including the victory over Ivan III's forces at the Battle of Smolina River in 1502 — a rare and significant check on early Muscovite expansion into the Baltic. These pfennigs were struck across his unusually long mastership of over four decades, and the billon content varied considerably as silver supplies fluctuated with the Order's finances. Haljak distinguishes multiple die varieties within the type.
