The joint coinage of the Livonian Order and the Archbishopric of Riga reflects one of medieval Livonia's persistent political tensions — the two powers had been in open conflict as recently as the 1470s, and their cooperative minting arrangements were less a sign of harmony than a practical concession to commerce. Wolter von Plettenberg, the Order's most capable master, is best remembered for his 1502 victory over Muscovite forces at the Battle of Smolina, which bought the region decades of relative stability. Jasper Linde served as Archbishop from 1509 until his death in 1524, which brackets this issue precisely.
