This joint issue reflects a period of uneasy cooperation between the Livonian Order and the Archbishopric of Riga, two powers that spent much of the early sixteenth century in open dispute over trade rights and jurisdictional authority within the city. Wolter von Plettenberg, the Order's most capable Landmeister, had defeated a Muscovite invasion in 1502 and used that political capital to press Riga hard on commercial concessions. Jasper Linde served as Archbishop through much of this coinage's production window.
The smooth-shield variant distinguishes this type from otherwise similar Pfennig issues of the same partnership, a die detail that Fehring catalogues separately under Fed#413.
