Beschrijving voorzijde Quartered shield of arms occupying the central field, displaying the dynastic devices of the Salm-Dhaun Wildgraviate and Rhingraviate, including a lion rampant in the sinister quarter and crosses in the dexter quarter, divided by a central pale. The legend DAVN appears above the shield in Latin characters. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border typical of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage of the German states.

Aanvullende informatie

Salm-Dhaun occupied a peculiar position in the fragmented sovereignty of the Holy Roman Empire — the Wildgraviate and Rhingraviate titles were ancient Rhenish offices whose territorial authority had been subdivided so many times through inheritance that by the early seventeenth century the counts exercised coinage rights over territories barely large enough to sustain them. Wolfgang Frederick's silver Pfennig, struck at under a quarter gram, sits at the extreme lower boundary of practical monetary production.
