Kiauchau was Germany's leased territory on the Shandong Peninsula, seized from China in 1897 following the murder of two German missionaries. This 1914 pfennig was among the last tokens struck for local circulation before Japan — entering World War I on the Allied side — besieged and captured the territory in November 1914. The entire German colonial administration was expelled within weeks of this coin's minting.
