| Reverse description | The reverse features a single large raised numeral '1' centrally positioned in the otherwise plain copper field, serving as a secondary denomination indicator. The design is entirely unadorned, consistent with the coin's emergency issue character, and is framed by a continuous raised bead border running along the inner rim. |

| Additional information |
Kiauchau was Germany's leased territory on the Shandong Peninsula, seized from China in 1897 following the murder of two German missionaries. This 1914 pfennig was among the last tokens struck for local circulation before Japan — entering World War I on the Allied side — besieged and captured the territory in November 1914. The entire German colonial administration was expelled within weeks of this coin's minting.
