The Neu-Guinea Compagnie was a chartered trading company granted administrative authority over German New Guinea in 1885, effectively running a colonial territory as a private commercial enterprise. When Berlin revoked the company's administrative charter in 1899 — the experiment deemed a failure — these coins became obsolete almost immediately, replaced by standard German colonial issues. The company had struck denominations in Berlin specifically because no imperial colonial coinage yet existed for the territory.

Circulated examples are genuinely scarce; the population they served was tiny and the administrative collapse came quickly.
