KM#1 designates the adopted circulation type, not this piece — a pattern struck ahead of the Kaiserreich's pfennig standardization following the 1871 unification. The new empire needed a unified small coinage to replace the chaotic patchwork of state issues still circulating across Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, and a dozen smaller territories. Patterns from this period were struck at Berlin in limited numbers for official review, and copper examples at this weight spec were ultimately rejected in favor of the slightly heavier production standard. Few were preserved outside institutional collections.
