Ulrich of Nussdorf held the see of Passau from 1451 to 1479, and his smaller silver issues circulated in a diocese that straddled the Bavarian-Austrian border — a region where competing monetary jurisdictions from the Habsburgs, the Wittelsbachs, and numerous ecclesiastical mints created chronic small-change chaos. Pfennigs of this type rarely survived in decent condition precisely because they did move through hands constantly, funding the grain and salt trade along the Inn and Danube corridors.
