Theodoric I Schenk of Erbach served as Archbishop of Mainz from 1434 to 1459, a tenure marked by the city's turbulent relationship with its own citizens — Mainz lost its status as a Free Imperial City in 1462, partly due to conflicts rooted in this very period. Small silver pfennigs of this type circulated in a region already absorbing the economic disruption of the Hussite wars' aftermath and the early pressures of territorial consolidation among Rhenish ecclesiastical powers.
Walther 138 is specific to this archbishop's issues; the series is modestly documented but sparsely collected.
