Bavaria-Landshut's division from the larger Wittelsbach inheritance had been formalized decades earlier, and Stephan III and John II ruled the duchy jointly — a co-rule arrangement that was administratively awkward and fiscally contentious. Small silver pfennigs of this type circulated in a regional economy still absorbing the disruptions of the Black Death's second and third waves, with labor scarcity having reshuffled trade patterns across the Bavarian duchies throughout the latter fourteenth century. Hahn 100 distinguishes this as the second type within their joint coinage, implying at minimum one documented die or design revision during a reign of under three years.
