Stephan II ruled Bavaria-Landshut following the catastrophic partition of 1349, when the Wittelsbachs once again subdivided their already fragmented territories — a dynastic habit that plagued Bavarian monetary coherence for generations. Small silver pfennigs of this period circulated alongside coins from no fewer than three other concurrent Wittelsbach lines, creating chronic exchange problems in regional markets.
At 0.37 g, these bracteate-influenced pfennigs were struck on thin, fragile flans particularly susceptible to cracking. Centered strikes are genuinely uncommon.
