Sophia of Brabant governed Thuringia as regent for her son Heinrich I of Hesse after winning his claim through the War of the Thuringian Succession — a conflict triggered by the extinction of the Ludowingian landgraves in 1247. These pfennigs were struck during that regency period as she consolidated Hessian authority against rival claimants, principally the Wettin Margrave of Meissen, who held competing rights to the territory.
The coinage effectively announced political control as much as it facilitated commerce. Schütz I#1 placement suggests this is among the earliest documented issues attributable to her administration.
