Sigismund von Volkersdorf held the see of Salzburg from 1452 until his death in 1461, a tenure marked by ongoing friction with the Habsburg dukes over temporal authority in the archbishopric's territories. Small billon issues of this type circulated primarily within the Salzburg market economy alongside the larger silver pfennig denominations, filling the gap for the most minor transactions of daily commerce. The CNA A78 attribution places this within a tightly documented sequence of Salzburg episcopal pfennigs that numismatists have only systematically catalogued in the late twentieth century.
