| 背面描述 | The arms of the city of Selb occupy the central field, depicted as a quartered shield bearing horizontal lines in the left quarters and a rampant lion in the right quarters, supported by ornate scrolled cartouche supporters at either side. A mural crown surmounts the shield, with the date '1918' flanking the crown on either side. A continuous circular legend surrounds the entire composition, reading 'BIEGEN ODER BRECHEN - SIEGEN ODER BLECHEN,' a patriotic wartime motto meaning 'Bend or break — conquer or pay,' separated by a star at the base. |

Selb issued this zinc notgeld pfennig in 1918 as wartime metal shortages made regular coinage effectively impossible — the German military had commandeered copper and nickel for munitions, forcing hundreds of municipalities to strike their own emergency currency. Selb, a Bavarian town whose economy was already dominated by its porcelain industry, was among the smaller communities compelled to fill the gap left by the Imperial mint's inability to supply small change.
