Rudolph August ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel jointly with his brother Anton Ulrich from 1685 onward, but these pfennigs predate that arrangement — struck during his sole rule, a period when the fragmented Lower Saxon Circle was still absorbing the economic damage of the Thirty Years' War. At 0.29 g of silver, these are among the smallest denomination coins produced by the Wolfenbüttel mint, and surviving examples in any condition above heavily worn are genuinely scarce.
