Max Roesler A.G. was a porcelain and earthenware manufacturer based in Rodach, Bavaria, one of hundreds of German industrial firms that issued private emergency coinage — Kriegsgeld and later Notgeld — during and after the First World War when the Imperial government failed to supply adequate small change. Zinc was the near-universal fallback once copper and nickel were requisitioned for the war effort. Factory-issued pfennig pieces like this one functioned as internal scrip, redeemable at company canteens or local cooperative stores tied to the firm.
