Richard of Greiffenklau zu Vollraths held the archbishopric from 1511 until his death in 1531, a tenure defined largely by his opposition to the Reformation — he was among the ecclesiastical princes who worked to suppress Lutheran influence along the Rhine. Small silver pfennig issues of this type circulated as the lowest practical denomination in the electorate, used for everyday transactions in a period when Trier's monetary authority was being quietly eroded by the broader upheaval of Reformation politics and the competing ambitions of neighboring secular territories.
